Newzones Gallery of Contemporary Art Celebrates 25 Years this fall, representing leading names in Canadian art.

Rewind to 1992, as Helen Zenith, a successful abstract painter for over 20 years, expresses her desire to become an art dealer as well. As luck  (and genetics) would have it, she found her business partner in her daughter Tamar, who was graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill  University. This mother and daughter, art and commerce duo, realized their dream in small warehouse space on the edge of Calgary. The space (formerly Helen’s studio) was converted into a hip, contemporary gallery they called, Newzones.

Working through some big economic shifts in the Alberta market and some even larger ones in an ever-evolving and growing Canadian art market, they quickly made their mark, first in Calgary, then across Canada and now on the international art scene. They’re proud of this achievement and are celebrating their 25 years with a party that coincides with the opening of Colleen Philippi’s show, “Beautiful Mess” on Thursday, November 30, 2017. Ms. Philippi an  internally-renowned, Calgary-based artist has been creating and showing her mystical, highly creative artworks at Newzones for the past 24 years. In addition, a group exhibit entitled “25” will highlight major names which have contributed to Newzones longevity and success like Canadian artists Dianne Bos, Cathy Daley, Yechel Gagnon, Anda Kubis, Marie Lannoo, Sarah Nind, William Perehudoff (1918-2013), Kevin Sonmor, etc., and International artists Alex Katz, Donald Sultan, Julian Schnabel, etc.

Newzones is thrilled to be celebrating this milestone during Canada’s sesquicentennial year, in the city of Calgary where they began and their hearts belong. They’re proud of the success of their artists, who helped change the image of “The Wild West” into a west that’s as elegant, cosmopolitan, and vibrant as anywhere in the world. A place, where contemporary artists live and work to produce world-class art. Newzones remains committed to the development and enhancement of its Canadian artists and is very proud of its role in making Canadian art a respected contributor to the international scene.  Newzones feels renewed, refreshed and ready, to take on the next 25 years!!!

Newzones has redefined the way the world looks and thinks about Contemporary Canadian Art. Their mandate from the beginning was to introduce and promote Canadian artists beyond Calgary and Canada on the international art circuit with museum-quality curated exhibitions and though their inclusion and involvement in international art fairs. Newzones commitment to the visual arts over the past 25 years expanded significantly as they work with collectors, collections and art enthusiasts across the globe.

On the international level, Newzones actively attends art fairs abroad to promote their artist’s work in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, and London. Presence at these fairs has created international followings for several of Newzones’ Canadian artists. For 25 years, Newzones has showcased artists in over 250 exhibitions that educated, stimulated and inspired people into bring more Canadian art into their lives and homes. Their artists are also collected by the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, Canada Council Art Bank, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Glenbow Museum, Mendel Art Gallery, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts to name of few.
