Taking the title “rīvus,” which means stream in Latin, 2022 Biennale of Sydney will take the concept of waterways and rivers as a jumping-off point and focus on indigenous knowledge, paying close attention to the indigenous histories of where the Biennale of Sydney is sited. In particular, the Biennale will “enable aqueous beings—rivers, wetlands, and other salt and freshwater ecosystems—to share a dialogue with artists, architects, designers, scientists, and communities,” per the curatorial team.

Inspired by the traditional water collection and purification system known as "wachaque" in the Peruvian desert region, Ana and Rafael Freyre used reeds, totora and modern techniques to create "Ecosistema del Agua", a ritual space that reconstructs the symbolic value of water, reproduces the ancestral wisdom, explores the possibilities of integrating modern technologies, and reflects our ecology embodied by water.
