Space Invaders Mandala by Olivier Marchand

Space Invaders was one of the earliest and most successful arcade video game of my generation. Developed by Tomohiro Nishikado and released in 1978, it was one of the forerunners of the modern video game world and greatly influenced the massive global expansion the industry saw in the last 30 years. A simple game in which the player must earn as many points as possible by eradicating waves of aliens spaceships with a laser cannon (video).

I guess working for a video game company for several years inspired me for this project. The pixelated enemy alien, who became a pop culture icon, is the type of raw material I love to work with. Other artists have toyed with this icon in the past but for this print, I tried something slightly more symbolizing of a mandala, a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism that represents the Universe in its infinity.
