"My past is deeply connected to printed materials. I was raised off-grid by hippy parents in the 70’s, and my cultural connection to the outside world was through books and printed images (rather than television as it was for many of my peers). As a result, I collect and value print media, arguably to the point of compulsion. I began incorporating collage in my paintings in art school, but these works are the first in my history where I allow the printed materials to remain unobscured.
The “Mapping Series” pieces are constrained and straightforward, and are investigations of variation within simplicity. Limiting myself to three components (painted paper, printed maps and ink), I allow the material elements prominence: color, tonality and rhythm become the focus. These clear confines create a satisfying freedom within the work."
