"Like I always say, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador is a goldmine"

“ It is rare to find a landscape that is perfect, but this is what I try to find”, says Jean Claude Roy. He will drive across the countryside in his bright green van looking for inspiration, and suddenly he is compelled to stop. Jean Claude is suddenly struck with a landscape that he wants to capture on the canvas.

“Like I always say, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador is a goldmine. Every cove is a studio for an artist”. Jean Claude Roy makes that cove his studio, setting up his easel, canvas and paintbox. The creative process begins. He appears indifferent to the conditions and will paint in every type of weather, in sunshine, rain, and even snow on occasion.

Jean Claude Roy’s palettes are varied and surprising. A sky may be blue, but often is purple or even orange. “I think I am chasing colours I cannot see…. I am so obsessed with colour that I wish there were more. Some people ask me sometimes, ‘What would you like for your birthday?’ His answer, "A tube of paint, and maybe a bottle of wine too”, he chuckles.

‘Chasing Colours in Brigus South, Newfoundland and Labrador ‘ is a video produced for Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism. Target Marketing creates this smart video showing Jean Claude Roy painting in the community of Brigus South on the southern shore of the island of Newfoundland.

Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism video captures the essence of the province. “Teetering on the edge of the continent, and steeped in natural creativity, Newfoundland and Labrador is the perfect muse. And so it is for Jean Claude Roy, who has painted this landscape for more than 40 years, constantly searching for the perfect colours to capture the beauty around him. With inspiration like this, it should come as no surprise that we have some of the most creative people in North America.”
