In anticipation of Valentine’s Day, Public Art Fund's staff members are sharing some of their most beloved exhibitions from our archives.

Chris Doyle, Commutable, 1996

It’s fitting that I choose a piece that in its nature is all about absence, decay, and memory - having never set eyes on it myself. By cladding the steps of the Williamsburg Bridge in gold leaf, they were immediately transformed from something banal, utilitarian, and generally taken for granted into something beautiful and celebratory. As an intervention it is simple, straightforward, and stunning all at the same time, qualities necessary to the best public art, and art in general for that matter.
