Miami, FL, August 20, 2018 — On Thursday, August 16, art collectors, curators, and friends joined Katelijne de Backer, Director of PULSE Contemporary Art Fair for an intimate dinner and conversation in honor of PULSE’s 2018 PROJECTS Special Commission Artist, hosted at the new Mizu and Taiyo Penthouse of Nobu Hotel Eden Roc Miami Beach.

PULSE is pleased to present this year’s PROJECTS Special Commission by Miya Ando, whose immersive, site-specific installation will activate PULSE’s entrance to welcome visitors down a path of discovery before they even enter the fair. Using her signature imagery Clouds, photographed in Miami and transferred into a series of gossamer silk banners, Ando’s experiential work will offer an opportunity to become aware of nature and the environment, promoting calmness, inter-connectivity, and an attention to the viewer’s relationship to time and the present moment. The material produces a visceral experience that invites meditation on the shared human condition of the beauty of impermanence.

“We are very pleased to welcome Miya Ando as our 2018 PROJECTS Commissioned Artist. It was wonderful to celebrate her participation in Miami Beach as we look forward to her installation this December during the 14th Edition of PULSE Contemporary Art Fair.” – Director, Katelijne De Backer

“It is such an honor to be commissioned for this special project with PULSE. I am very excited to create an experience of walking through a gossamer forest of moonlit clouds” – Miya Ando

Guests included Tobias Ostrander - Chief Curator, Perez Art Museum; Leilani Lynch - Assistant Curator, Bass Museum of Art; Zoe Lukov - Curator, FAIR. & Faena Art with Anthony Spinello - Owner, Spinello Projects; Courtney Casci - Director of Development, ICA Miami; Megan Riley - Director of External Affairs, Bass Museum of Art; Bonnie Clearwater - Director and Chief Curator, Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale; Rosa Lowinger - Art Advisor; Kathryn & Dan Mikesell - Founder, The Fountainhead Residency, among others.

PROJECTS is PULSE’s initiative for the presentation and promotion of site specific, large-scale sculpture, installation and performance within the fair environment. Started in 2016, PROJECTS Special Commission allows PULSE to collaborate with a selected artist by providing them a major platform at the fair. The full 2018 roster of PROJECTS artists will be announced in October, ahead of this year’s edition of PULSE Miami Beach, which will be returning to its oceanfront home at Indian Beach Park from Thursday, December 6 through Sunday, December 9, 2018.

While enjoying Nobu’s world-class cuisine, guests conversed over the anticipation of this year’s Miami Art Week, and left with a limited edition ‘print’ of the exclusive Moonlit Clouds by Miya Ando.

Miya Ando | PROJECT Special Commission Artist

Miya Ando is an American artist who lives and works between NYC and Los Angeles. Drawing from Buddhist philosophical underpinnings, Ando pays acute attention to how light is expressed in space, and seamlessly transfers her observations into the work. Her self-developed process of painting onto the surface of aluminum creates tranquil scenes of atmosphere, while her glass sculptures capture ephemeral cloud formations. Beauty can always be found in these fleeting, temporary moments of existence. Ando’s work has been the subject of recent solo exhibitions internationally including SCAD Museum of Art, The Noguchi Museum, The Katzen Arts Center, Sundaram Tagore Gallery, and Lesley Kehoe Galleries. Her work has also been included in group exhibitions at institutions including LACMA, San Jose Museum of Art, Bronx Museum, and Queens Museum of Art. Ando has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant Award and a Commission for The Philip Johnson Glass House.  http://www.miyaando.com
