ART: Where to start?!
So you’re curious about art but don't think collecting is for you? Or maybe you're considering making a purchase of your first piece but don’t know what to do next?Here are five top tips to help you take the plunge!
1. GO OUTSIDE
It’s never been easier to buy art online… but unless you know exactly what you’re looking for you’ll want to start by viewing as much work as possible in person! Your city probably has all kinds of galleries and museums that you haven’t been to yet. Set some time aside this weekend and go check them out!

That’s no excuse. Instead of going for drinks and brunch with friends, invite them along for an art date. Got a love interest? Day dates are totally in right now and you can muse over textures, colours and brushstrokes together! Doing so will help you develop your tastes and learn what to look for in your next purchase.
2. GET ONLINE
There are so many places you can enjoy art online right now. Between Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest and Twitter… all it takes is a few clicks to start following the museums and liking the art works you’ve just seen live.
Once you have an idea of what you’re looking for and some artists in mind, start researching. Check out the artist’s background, education, and previous exhibitions. Of course there are many self-taught artists out there who do incredible work, but you want to make sure that the artist you’re investing in is committed to their practice and intends to continue creating work.
3. CHECK YOUR BANK ACCOUNT
Art can come with some extra costs, from shipping and import taxes, to framing and insurance for pricier pieces. Most galleries are willing to offer a slight discount, usually between 5–15% off, and if it’s a more expensive piece, they can also offer payment plans.
Oil paintings still tend to be the most expensive, but that’s because the materials are super costly. They also tend to hold their value. Works on paper and photographs tend to be more affordable so these are options worth exploring. if you are considering purchasing a print, make sure they are limited edition, signed and numbered.
Art is an investment, but if you budget accordingly you can have a work of art that lasts a lifetime and can be passed on to future generations.
4. TAKE YOUR TIME
Finding the art you love could take ten minutes, but it could take two years! Take the time you need to find the right piece. Then take the plunge!
5. BREAK THE RULES
Despite what anyone may tell you, there are no ‘real’ rules when it comes to buying art. Generally you want to focus on buying quality over quantity, and originals over editions. Other than that, you don’t need to splurge on a large statement piece and you don’t necessarily need to start small either.
It’s really about finding pieces that resonate with you, that are meaningful to you, and that you love. There’s so much amazing art in the world it really doesn’t make sense to buy something unless you love it.
