ROCI was a journey of artistic ambassadorship and learning across ten countries outside of the United States to discover and experience the true fabric of each nation. Rauschenberg’s aim was to spend as much time as possible in the host country to experience the sights and sounds, to meet the local people, and to learn about diverse cultural traditions, new artistic materials, and local practices. Inspired by the conditions of the host country, Rauschenberg created artworks that would eventually be exhibited there. The travelogues document this journey across each ROCI country. On occasion, Rauschenberg can be seen in the films photographing imagery that can later be found in some of the ROCI artworks in these galleries. This tangible journey of one-on-one interactions with diverse communities to exchange and understand different artistic ideas and practices provided a small but potentially important stepping-stone toward peace.
