The artist chosen to represent Russia at the 55th Venice Biennale is Vadim Zakharov, who was born in 1959 in Dushanbe and lives and works in Moscow and Berlin. He will be working in association with one of Europe’s most distinguished curators Udo Kittelmann, who is Director of the Nationalgalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. This collaboration was brought about by commissioner of the Russian Pavilion Stella Kesaeva, who is also the founder of the Stella Art Foundation. The Russian Pavilion will be funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Stella Art Foundation, a Moscow-based organisation which has, over the last decade, provided an important platform for contemporary art in Russia. Kesaeva’s vision to promote Russian contemporary culture is particularly significant as 2013 will mark 100 years since the architect Alexei Schusev started work on the Russian Pavilion.
