This week’s poll is with Los Angeles-based artist (and my dear friend!) Sarah Cain.  Sarah was not only part of LAND’s exhibition in Marfa, TX, Nothing Beside Remains, but will also be in LAND’s upcoming exhibition, Painting in Place, opening on May 22nd in Los Angeles at the historic Farmers and Merchants Bank.  LAND also published her first monograph, Sarah Cain, which explores her work in various media, which constantly challenges and expands upon the definition of painting through experiments in site and context.

Here’s our poll:

1.) What is your favorite thing about each of the 4 seasons? Least favorite?

SC:

Favorite for summer in LA: swimming

Least Favorite for summer in LA: the rise in shootings

Favorite for summer in upstate NY: swimming & hanging with Bernadette Meyer

Least favorite for summer in upstate NY: humidity

Favorite for fall in LA: when the heat finally breaks

Least favorite for fall in LA: studio too hot to work

Favorite for fall in upstate NY: everything

Least favorite for fall in upstate NY: Halloween

Favorite for winter in LA:  watching everything bloom

Least favorite for winter in LA:  rain

Least favorite for spring in LA: not much

Favorite for spring in upstate NY: the first crocuses

Least favorite for spring in upstate NY: set backs to winter

2.) If you had an extra 5K a month you could only use on some luxury item or service what would it be? As an example, mine would hands down be a car and driver.

SC: I’d rent an extra house with a steam shower in the country near a swimming hole.

3.) What are the top three songs you wish you'd written? Also, the top three you wish had never been written at all?

SC:

“Free Money” by Patti Smith

“Ambulance Blues” by Neil Young

“UMA” by OOIOO

As for never written…there’s too many...

4.) What is your "inspiration song"? Tell the truth...it can also be qualified, for exercising for example, for a breakup, for success in whatever current goal you have, etc.

SC: These change frequently but right now I listen to “IANAHB (I am not a human being 2)” by Lil Wayne and “Falling” by Bouquet everyday when I get to the studio.  I work out to Frank Ocean’s “Pyramids” & Jay Z & Kanye West’s Watch the Throne album… oh and I live for 2pm in the studio when Power 106 plays their new at two songs.
