Marianne Goebl took over as Director of Design Miami/ and Design Miami/ Basel in early 2011. Prior to that, she occupied several major positions at furniture brand Vitra where she found herself working alongside world-renowned designers like Ron Arad, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Konstantin Grcic, Hella Jongerius, and Jasper Morrison. “Our goal here at Design Miami/ is to take the visitor on a journey throughout the entire design history,” says Goebl. The installation You Fade To Light, designed by rAndom International, is one particularly pioneering object Goebl points to. The large wall piece consists of multiple mirrors where the viewer can create a unique dialogue between themselves and their mirror image by turning the movement into light. Hannes Koch is one of three directors at rAndom International, and explains that by using a new lighting technology called OLED (organic-light-emitting-diode), the user gets an abstract representation of him or herself. "It’s definitely something different,” says Koch. “People don’t [usually] dance in front of furniture."
