William Frederick de Haas Biography

Born in Rotterdam in 1830, William Frederick de Haas studied art in Holland both in Rotterdam and at The Hague before emigrating to the United States in 1854. After settling in New York, he rented space at the famous Tenth Street Studio Building. An accomplished marine painter, he is best known for his coastal scenes, with many paintings of the dramatic and varied Maine seacoast. De Haas frequently exhibited at the National Academy of Design (1867-1880) and the Brooklyn Art Association (1867-1880). His work can be viewed in many notable public collections such as the New York Historical Society and the National Academy of Design Museum in New York, NY; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT; Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, MA; and Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA.
