Self Portrait with Larionov (Pierrot and Columbine) 1909-10

One of the more subversive practices Goncharova employed throughout her long career was to paint the same subject again years after first execution. In this case she redoes the same subject originally painted in 1906. By the time this version was produced, she and Larionov had become the twin scourges of Russian high society and good taste. The first edition of this image is an altogether more timid and unfocused picture depicting the two painters as more or less disconnected and floating in the pictorial space. The example here has them connected and moving forward as one organic, creeping entity while Goncharova herself stares boldly back toward the viewer. www.astonethrown.com
