In Zanic's recent body of work, the abstracted notions of atmospheric landscapes are a metaphorical expression of life's mysterious and elusive paths. Works are built with layers of watercolor washes, intermixed with dynamic lines, scribbles and marks of ink drawing. There is a quiet tension between the watercolor's fluidity, softness and calm, vs. the dynamic, rhythm and energy of drawing. These paintings are never preconceived; they evolve from a notion, develop through intuition, revealing an evocative rather than descriptive quality. The process of painting becomes an intimate search that shadows life's own sense of voyage through the fleeting realms of the unknown, and mirrors life's duality of the controlled and the accidental, while retaining a sense of calm and contemplation.
Since earning her MFA at the University of Zagreb in 2002, Ana Zanic has had over a dozen solo shows and sixty-plus group shows, in Croatia and the United States.
