Armory Focus: USA
For the fourth edition of Armory Focus, the curated section of our show, we shift our gaze to the United States under the curatorial vision of Eric Shiner, Director of the Andy Warhol Museum. Approaching the topic of ‘America’ through the eyes of over twenty artists, Shiner has enlisted artists who— "directly or discreetly, humorously or with a bone to pick”—have focused on the United States as the subject of their work. “Some might critique America, while others celebrate its history, legacy, or absurdity,” Shiner said, who, like our Executive Director Noah Horowitz, considers the fair in regard to the historic 1913 Armory Show. “In our continued celebration of the original Armory of 1913 and the mixture of ambivalence, anxiety, and excitement the introduction of modernism brought to the United States, we are delighted to present an exhibition emphasizing both the shock of the new and the shock of the old.”
