Through 3D drawing, I am exploring how altered surfaces facilitate expression. In a traditional drawing, a line and a surface inform each other – the surface facilitates the line while the line modulates the surface-plane. When the line on a surface is replaced by an incision, a cut into the surface-plane, the result is three-dimensional. The surface-line dynamic is altered in that the incision creates a surface that forms around the line. Surface and line are now integral character-changing information.

This change in surface-line dynamic supports new opportunities for expression. By inscribing multiple substrates with cuts, I create connections between different, independent pieces of paper or other sheet materials. Through 3D drawing, I am using the line-cuts to express alternate relationships between individual substrates.
