I first met Lucie Rouart in her boutique in the 8th arrondisement of Paris, amidst all the clothing that she had designed and produced. Her resemblance to Berthe Morisot was striking: the same eyes, the same intelligent and sensual gaze. We met again at the home in the country near Paris where Berthe Morisot and Eugene Manet had lived, which is now used by Lucie's family as a weekend vacation home. This is where I photographed her. I asked her to think of this portrait of her ancestor by Manet and look at me. She said, "I grew up with this painting - it was hanging in the stairwell of our house". And so she looked at me, one eye engaged and direct and the other directed to a place far away, just as Berthe had looked at Edouard.
