West Branch Gallery & Sculpture Park artist Clark Derbes was named 2015 Barbara Smail Award Winner by Burlington City Arts (BCA), as announced on Seven Days’ website on April 10, 2015. Barbara Smail was a beloved painter whose family and friends endowed the award, which has been presented annually since 2003. Derbes will receive $1,500 cash and use of The BCA Center’s studio facilities for one year. In early 2016, Derbes will have a solo show of his work at The BCA Center and will be asked to donate an artwork to BCA to help support the program. Nominations for the award come from members of BCA’s Gallery Advisory Committee, the BCA Board of Directors, and members of the community.

Clark Derbes’ work is on view at West Branch Gallery and will exhibit new works in his solo exhibition scheduled August 7, 2015. Originally from Louisiana, Derbes’ current body of work consists of carved and polychromed wood sculptures, which are influenced by his Louisiana upbringing, Vermont chainsaw carvings, and his deep respect for the environment.
