Authenticity and originality have been important concepts in the history of art particularly since Duchamp questioned the sanctity of these ideas with his early ready-mades. Since the financial crisis of 2008, any division that once existed between the originality and authenticity of currency has been destabilized to the point of complete and utter un-recognition. In the age of austerity, when bank bailouts are as common as the ever-expanding base of the credit crisis itself, notions of authenticity and originality are perhaps the last vestiges of central banks, who claim legitimacy as the sole arbiters of centrally planned economies through the issuance of fiat money, debt and fiscal slavery.
Taking place at the border of legality and illegality, REICHbankNOTE attempts to unpackage notions of authenticity and originality with respect to currency, conceptualizing finance as a space where new artistic possibilities are both conceived and realized.
