Color Photography

While Vivian Maier is most known for her black-and-white snapshots taken on city streets, the enigmatic photographer also left behind a trove of color photographs. Produced during the last thirty years of her life, the 700 rolls and 40,000 color Ektachrome slides are widely considered her most mysterious body of work. When these images were first debuted to the public in 2018, scholars and fans continued to unravel the most pressing questions that remain about her work and life, including who her influences were as a photographer (such as Diane Arbus and Robert Frank), why she changed her shooting style (her new color camera necessitated an upright photographer’s stance), and what informed her choice of subject (her personal life aging in solitude).
