Aaron Angell
British, b. 1987
Aaron Angell (b.1987) is an English artist living and working in London.
Angell’s ceramics primarily reference the underground hand-built ceramics of Britain from the 1970s and 80s. The glazing process is an integral part of the making of the works, and these glazes are produced by using the firing of the gas kiln; they rely on heavy and specific reduction and smoking of the atmosphere within the kiln at particular temperatures. Describing his work as ‘avowedly amateur’ yet underpinned by extensive technical knowledge, Angell has written: ‘I see my work within a ceramic tradition of material experimentation, folk history and hermetic knowledge, but somewhat outside of the often-narrow worldview of the craft potter.’ Angell is interested in marginal forms of image-making and hopes to encourage new ways of thinking about the culturally nuanced history of ceramics by focusing on the material as a vehicle for sculpture.
Angell work has been widely exhibited, including at Hauser & Wirth (Somerset, 2018) and Tate St Ives (Cornwall, 2017). His work can be found in the permeant collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, Tate collection and Arts Council Collection. He is the founder of Troy Town Art Pottery, a ceramic hub and workshop for artists in London.
