Abigail DeVille’s site-specific, immersive installations bring awareness to the erased histories of marginalized people and places. Works such as Wild Seed (2013) incorporate found materials and objects specifically chosen for their references to culture, history, social issues, and the art historical canon. By spotlighting deterioration, disintegration, and rebirth, the artist reflects on the social and racial oppression marginalized people have experienced throughout history. DeVille, who studied at Yale School of Art and the Fashion Institute of Technology, has exhibited at the New Museum Triennial and the Venice Biennale. DeVille has received residencies at the American Academy in Rome and The Studio Museum in Harlem.
