Biography

Adad Hannah is best known for staging tableaux vivant videos that often reference famous artworks or capture moments from everyday life. One of his most ambitious projects, “The Raft of the Medusa (100 Mile House),” (2009) involved a three month preparation period in order to recreate Théodore Géricault’s monumental painting in front of a live audience, a life-drawing class, and Hannah’s cameras. Each project of this scale typically results in film stills and a live recording of the tableaux vivant. Hannah’s projects are intended to activate a viewer’s sense of agency in front of a cultural artifact, using the boundary between imitation and imprecision to create new meaning behind an iconic image.
