Adria Marxia
Slovak, b. 1991
ADRIA MARXIA (1991) is a political artist. Born and raised in Slovakia, she studied in the United Kingdom, completing a postgraduate degree in International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and an undergraduate degree in Modern History and Politics at the University of Essex. During her childhood and study years, she got highly influenced by punk subculture, liberal philosophy, left-wing politics and nonconformist ideas, all of which shaped her worldview significantly.
After her academic studies, she spent five years working in the sphere of politics and diplomacy, which included the work for the European Parliament in Brussels as well as for the government of Slovakia. Disillusioned by the lack of possibility to contribute to a real societal change, Adria decided to invest her knowledge and experience from the world of politics into politically engaged art and activism.
As a trained historian and political scientist, she brings to the art world something most artists don’t – a philosophy formed by a decade of the study of history and politics. This not only involves a different conceptual approach in creating and presenting artworks, but also the inclusion of political and protest messages as the integral part of artistic work.
As a result, in her art – spanning from painting and writing to photography and fashion design – she is focusing on the various social, political, economic and environmental problems of the society today. Adria’s work reflects her social-liberal values, rebellious personality and strong provoking messages she wants to send out to the society. She desires to inspire for a real change in the current state of affairs as well and at last, contribute making this world a fairer place for all without exception.
