Alberto Meda

Italian, born 1945

Designing from the perspective of an engineer, Alberto Meda uses high-tech materials and carefully considered details to push the boundaries of lightness in his sleek creations. His 1987 Light Light chair—one of four of his designs in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art—weighs in at less than two pounds, thanks to his innovative use of a Nomex honeycomb core and a carbon-fiber surface. He also paid special attention to the direction of the chair’s fibers to counter the thrust of the weight of the sitter, and to strengthen its joints. Since graduating from the Politecnico di Milano in 1969, Meda has held some of the most prestigious positions in the industry, including technical director at Kartell, consultant to Alfa Romeo, and instructor at the Domus Academy.
