Alex Weinstein
American, b. 1970
Alex Weinstein’s large-scale, contemporary color field paintings explore the immersive experience of being in the ocean. Weinstein graduated from Brown University in 1992 with dual degrees in visual arts and creative writing. The Pacific Ocean became his main subject after he moved to Los Angeles in the 1990s. The foreboding, lugubrious atmosphere of his minimal abstract waterscapes stems from Weinstein’s experience as a surfer. His color gradients and interest in the liminal recall Mark Rothko and Brice Marden, two significant influences on the artist. His work follows a long trajectory of California artists interested in light and its psychological effects. Weinstein has also created monumental sculptures, such as a public commission for the City of Manhattan Beach in 2014. He has exhibited at several museums, including the Laguna Art Museum and the Lancaster Museum of Art and History.
