Biography

Alexander Gronsky uses photography to explore borders and boundaries—between countries, rural and urban communities, civilization and wilderness. His interest is particularly in how and where people live in these “areas that lack definition”, and the human desire to transgress boundaries. His work also suggests the impossibility of truly connecting with or understanding the natural world. Gronsky began his career as a press photographer in 1998, a pursuit that still affects his personal documentary projects. His subjects have included wastelands and suburbs in Russian cities, the border between Russia and China, the Arctic Circle, and Azerbaijan in the Caucasus. Gronsky is known for his stark style, in which his subjects appear almost abstract against their backgrounds.
