Biography

Alexander Heim uses video and installation to deconstruct perceptions of mundane everyday occurrences, exploring the intersection of nature with the man-made world. In the video work Costa (2008), Heim’s camera follows the activities of pigeons loitering at an active London coffee shop. The presence of birds in a constructed environment is familiar, but defamiliarized by the accompanying soundtrack of daily routines: running water, brushing teeth, jingling keys. Another work, Untitled (Dog) (2006), follows a stray dog through the streets of China, its natural survival instincts unfolding in the planned urban environment overrun by cars and technology.
