Alexandra Gorczynski
American, b. 1983
Alexandra Gorczynski is known for multimedia works that blend the virtual and physical realms. She established herself as one of the progenitors of post-internet art for her influential digital paintings, drawings, and collages, alongside peers like Petra Cortright, Molly Soda, and Rafaël Rozendaal. Gorczynski began working in digital media as a BFA student in the Rhode Island School of Design’s painting department, and traditional painting techniques are evident in her digital markmaking. Painterly brushstrokes and isolated fields of color animate Plur Piece, a print that sold for $9,500 at the very first digital art auction in 2013 hosted by Phillips. Inspired by representations of the female figure and femininity in the digital era, Gorzynski draws from sources ranging from classical sculpture to Matisse’s collages. She also creates oil paintings that address the often overwhelming experience of surfing cyberspace.
