Alexandra Lakin makes colorful works on paper that are simultaneously abstract and narrative, decorative and figurative. Lakin’s illustrations feature characters trapped by “the flatness of the drawings,” she has said. Across her paintings, prints, and drawings—some of which are self-consciously childlike—Lakin uses the framework of hand-drawn, storybook-esque imagery to experiment with color, composition, and computer-generated stylizations.
