Alexandros Vasmoulakis
Greek, b. 1980
Alexandros Vasmoulakis’s mixed-media work brings together the influences of Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, street art, and cartoons. He is best known for his large paintings of hybrid figures, though he also creates murals, installations, and collages. Vasmoulakis studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts and the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague. His work has been featured in group shows at venues including the Benaki Museum, Centre for Fine Arts (BOZAR), and Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain. Vasmoulakis embraces spontaneity and creation through destruction. He draws on canvas then builds up his surfaces with oil paint and crayon, gradually scraping layers away. His textured paintings have also included collaged fragments of older work.
