Biography

Alfredo Álvarez Plágaro completes his abstract, mixed-media “Identical Paintings” in parallel, working on as many as 50 at a time. For Plágaro, the most important aspect of his art “is not what it is, but that what it is, it is repeatedly.” The parameter that each, typically strip-shaped painting be identical allows for rhythmic color fields to emerge when the series are viewed as a whole in rows, as he intends them to be. By working by hand, Plágaro plays off of mechanical forms of duplication, asserting that his paintings are at once identical and, technically, not identical. He cites Dada as a major inspiration for his works, seeing his incessant repetition as a channeling of the movement’s emphasis on absurdist humor and irony.
