Alfredo Arreguin
One of the pioneering painters of the Pattern and Decoration movement, Alfredo Arreguin is known for his colorful and luscious pattern paintings of jungle scenes and Mexican iconography. Arreguin also draws inspiration from the natural surroundings of his current home in the Pacific Northwest. He was the recipient of the Palm of People Award at the 11th International Festival of Painting at Cagnes-sur Mer and awarded a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1995, he received an OHTLI Award from the Mexican Government for promoting Mexican culture abroad. Arreguin received his BFA and MFA from the University of Washington. Works such as Frida in the Cut (2020), an allusory portrait of Frida Kahlo, incorporate intricate patterns and colors inspired by pre-Columbian art, Pacific Northwestern formline drawing, and Mexican art historical iconography. His work is in the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery.
