Brazilian, b. 1971

Biography

Inspired by her personal and professional background, Alice Shintani produces paintings—on canvas, on freestanding walls, and covering rooms from floor to ceiling—in which she crosses the computer-generated with the handmade, Japanese culture with Brazilian culture. Shintani is descended from Japanese immigrants and worked on early Internet development in the late 1980s. Working exclusively in pastel colors, which for her represent a cross between a computer- and hand-generated color palette, Shintani has explored Japanese ghosts, early computer game aesthetics, and domino playing in her semi-abstract paintings.
