Alix Mendoza - Embracing Heritage Through Art
Born on February 21, 1990, in the picturesque town of San Juan La Laguna, Sololá, Alix Mendoza hails from a family deeply rooted in artistic traditions. His great-grandfather, a dedicated carpenter, crafted wooden tools used to produce backstrap looms, a common practice among women in their community. The influence of his ancestors nurtured Mendoza's connection to creativity and expression.
Growing up amidst their rich artistic heritage, his passion for art flourished from a young age. At just 8 years old, he found himself drawn to his uncle's workshop, where he observed his tireless efforts to refine his technique. What he witnessed there fueled his curiosity, prompting him to share his newfound knowledge with his classmates in art classes. With leftover materials from these classes, Mendoza experimented, leaving behind a trail of stained and scratched creations. His commitment to art was unwavering, opting for art supplies over new clothes or toys.
As he continued his journey with art, the artist expanded his skills by learning from a master in a small workshop, alongside his brother and other cousins. However, after completing high school, he realized the need for further growth and knowledge. Despite his parents' wishes for him to pursue another profession, he followed his own passion. In 2005, Mendoza made the courageous decision to migrate to Guatemala City, seeking opportunities to enhance his artistic repertoire.
His pursuit of artistic excellence led Alix Mendoza to enroll in the renowned Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas (National School of Fine Arts). Here, he gained a broader understanding of techniques and styles, which invigorated his creativity. Three years later, he decided to specialize in sculpture, delving into different modeling techniques as well as carving wood and stone.
Throughout his artistic journey, Mednoza has continually found inspiration in corn.
