Aliza Nisenbaum
Mexican, b. 1977
Aliza Nisenbaum paints celebratory, large-scale paintings of marginalized subjects and community groups; her colorful canvases have featured subway employees, healthcare workers, security guards, and undocumented immigrants. Born in Mexico City, Nisenbaum initially studied psychology and intended to pursue social work. She shifted her focus to art and enrolled at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she completed both her BFA and MFA. Nisenbaum has exhibited globally and enjoyed shows at Tate Liverpool, MOCA Los Angeles, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the São Paulo Museum of Art. In 2017, she was included in the Whitney Biennial. For Nisenbaum, painting is also a social practice which allows her to engage in conversations that transcend the art world.
