Allen Grubesic
Swedish, born 1974

By wittily altering the ubiquitous words, icons, and images of mass media, popular culture, and art history, conceptual artist Allen Grubesic attempts to reveal the instability and malleability of systems of language and meaning. Grubesic is influenced by semiotics—the study of how meaning is produced through language and words—and wordplay is central to his practice, which encompasses a wide range of media, including video, sculpture, and painting. His painting Concept (2010) is a white canvas with the word “concept” printed across the center in bold, black letters. He has also produced a series of paintings, titled “Paintings” (2011), which consists of flat-colored panels with the word “painting” written on them.
