Working in a range of mediums—including sculpture, performance, video, and sound—Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla create art with a subversive edge, made with the intent of introducing small ruptures into the forces of globalization, imperialism, and consumerism. Allora and Calzadilla often explore the intersections of art and the environment with works such as Hope Hippo (2005), sculpted for the 51st Venice Biennale out of mud extracted from the city’s Grand Canal, and exhibited bearing a man nonchalantly reading a newspaper.
