Amiko Kamikaze
Austrian, b. 1983
Born in 1983 in Tbilisi, Georgia, Amiko Kamikaze lives and works in Vienna, Austria. His artistic practice involves creating small and sinister assemblages, tiny worlds assembled from old photographs, drawings, and texts, to which he adds paint, found objects and copper, plastic and cybertrash. Kamikaze’s work challenges the boundaries between sculpture, concept, and painting and takes a more is more approach to collage; the greater the range of elements the greater the possibility for viewers to navigate through them and forge relationships with the artwork.
Kamikaze’s creations tell stories of the dark sides of life, the things we keep concealed. Yet Kamikaze’s role as artist is to document not judge, even as he dives deeper into humanity’s abyss. However, these works are not wholly grim, and the artist often mixes humor into his work and code-switches between high culture and street chatter. For Kamikaze, art ‘lives its own life’ and thus people relate to it in infinite number of ways.
