Amy Greenan
American, b. 1970
Amy Greenan’s abandoned house paintings have been her primary focus since 2009. Haunted and daunting, yet rendered against jewel colored backgrounds and oftentimes sunny skies, they conjure the mystique of home and challenge our concepts of family and security. "I am interested in perceived similarities between these houses and the human body and experience; the abandoned houses have a history, memories and vulnerability in the same way that people do," says Greenan. The interior paintings are a natural extension of the exterior houses. They were borne out of the artist's desire to move on to something new, but still remaining interested in the gorgeous geometry and play of light that happens with these structures. Greenan was born in 1970, and raised in the exburbs of Buffalo, NY. She studied at SUNY Purchase (BFA, 1993), and the University at Buffalo (MFA, 2007). She lives in Niagara Falls, NY.
