Ana Žanić
Croatian American, b. 1976
Ana Žanić’s watercolor paintings are both an exploration of the formal visual elements, as well as her personal feelings through an intuitive, spontaneous process. Reminiscent of imaginary landscapes, her organic abstractions bring to mind abandoned landscapes, ancient scribbles, notions of the undersea life, amoebic flows, and distant constellations. Her distinct fluid forms evolve through layers of transparent washes. The emphasis on the mark-making in Žanić’s work is closely tied to calligraphy, language, and symbolic communication. Žanić holds an MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Zagreb, Croatia. Her work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and is in notable private and public collections worldwide, including the prestigious Agnes Gund Collection in New York. She currently lives and works in the United States.
