Over the past ten years, the Düsseldorf-based artist has developed a remarkable oeuvre consisting of models, sculptures, and drawings which attract considerable attention from both curators and private collectors. In his works, Andreas Schmitten orients himself towards the aesthetics of the Western consumer and commodity culture, consciously appropriating objects and positions from the history of art and film. Schmitten’s works oscillate between a minimalist and an opulent language of forms, which intentionally incorporates striking stage-like and theatrical elements of design. Although they are remotely reminiscent of familiar objects, such as paravents, changing rooms, cinema auditoriums, or closets, they are irritatingly colourful. Pink, raspberry red, mint green, and neon yellow all belong to Schmitten’s repertoire of colours.
