Andrew Parker
British, b. 1967
Andrew Parker is a visual artist and scientist whose work bridges biology, optics, and material innovation. His practice centers on the study and recreation of structural color—a form of coloration found in nature that arises not from pigments but from microscopic structures that manipulate light. Early in his scientific career, Parker investigated bioluminescent marine organisms and began identifying shared optical principles across species. This research laid the groundwork for his development of Pure Structural Colour®, a laboratory-created material inspired by naturally occurring color mechanisms. Through his studio and lab, Lifescaped, Parker explores the aesthetic and functional potentials of bio-inspiration, translating scientific discovery into artistic expression. His work operates at the intersection of natural science and design, aiming to deepen our understanding of light, form, and the materials that shape visual experience.
