Angela Grossmann
Canadian, b. 1955
Known for themes of sexuality, gender politics, and social margins, Angela Grossmann frequently explores the female transition from adolescence into adulthood and the emotional and social trappings inherent to this stage of self-discovery. Grossman repurposes discarded materials such as photographs, postcards, and other found objects to create varied collage-work that further investigates issues of displacement and identity. Speaking to Grossman’s 1994 exhibition “Scapegoats,” in which the artist transformed prisoners’ mug shots, close friend and fellow artist Douglas Coupland describes her work as “prime Grossman material: people who have been forgotten but have been preserved somehow. She gives their lives an arc, a trajectory, a mobility, a meaning.”
