Angelika Markul
Polish, b. 1977
Born in 1977 in Szczcein, Poland. She works and lives in Malakoff. She graduated from Beaux Arts de Paris, in Christian Boltanski’s multimedia studio.
In her artistic practice, Angelika Markul is interested in lost, unknown or dangerous places. Bringing together reality and fiction, sometimes even science fiction, her latest film projects have taken her to various unexpected places: Brrom region of Australia, on the tracks of dinosaurs, in Japan on the island of Yonaguni, where she discovered an undated monument drowned under the sea, as well as northern Mexico in the now impossible to visit Naica crystal mine, or to Tchernobyl in order to evoke this reconstructed nature on its own ruins. His films continue a process of reflection that began more than ten years ago on questions of memory, bodies and places, destruction and the cycle of life. Caught between these two paradoxes, her process is always motivated by a desire to capture images but also to sculpt them, making visible what is obscure and hidden.
