Anna Bjerger
Swedish, b. 1973
Painter Anna Bjerger transforms appropriated images into enigmatic, dreamlike tableaux. She draws her subject matter from books, hobbyist magazines, and travel brochures, liberating their material from informational or commercial contexts. Instead, Bjerger generates new, expansive connotations throughout her thickly layered paintings; she refers to her process as a sort of rescue. The painter mostly works with oil on aluminum, making quick, spontaneous compositions. Bjerger received her BA in fine art from Central Saint Martins and her MA in painting from the Royal College of Art. She has exhibited in New York, London, Paris, Los Angeles, Copenhagen, Rome, and Essen, Germany. Her work belongs in the collections of Moderna Museet, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, the Stedelijk Museum, the Zabludowicz Collection, and the Tishman Speyer Collection.
