Anne Packard
American, b. 1933
Anne Packard is celebrated for her spare, serene seascapes grounded in the representational tradition. Initially self-taught, Packard used driftwood and shingles as her canvases and eventually established her own gallery on Cape Cod. In the late 1970s, she studied with and was mentored by Philip Malicoat, later dedicating herself full-time to her artistic career. Detached (2018) illustrates her use of economic composition and sfumato brushwork to capture the expansiveness of the ocean. This sparseness imbues certain paintings such as Flats (2017) with a mysterious, abstract quality. Packard’s fascination with nature’s ever changing atmosphere is evident throughout her work as can be seen in the foreboding clouds of Stormfront (2017) and the tranquil skies of Blue (2015).
