Along with fellow French designer Jaqueline Lecoq, Antoine Philippon created functional furniture inspired by the aesthetic and values of the Union des Artistes Modern (U.A.M.). A group of young architects who significantly changed the face of French furniture design and production in the 1950s and 1960s, the U.A.M. sought to harmonize and bring comfort to the everyday lives of French citizens. To achieve this they fused form and function, creating efficient environments that were both comfortable and accessible. Their best known piece is perhaps the President desk, a work renowned for its pure and simple form, sleek design, and natural materials.
