Anton Alvarez
Swedish-Chilean, b. 1980
Sculptor Anton Alvarez creates objects that defy our understanding of gravity and weight using media such as wrapped thread and extruded ceramic. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, Alvarez shifts between the role of craftsman and engineer to bring his complex yet playful sculptures to life. Many of the artist’s works are bulbous cylindrical shapes that resemble hardened foam; their vibrant color palette adds to the energetic feeling that radiates from them. Alvarez has participated in group shows at the Daelim Museum, and the Texture, Museum of Flax and Textiles. His work is held in the public collections of Stockholm’s Nationalmuseum, the Denver Art Museum, and the Röhsska Museum of Design and Craft. Alvarez’s brilliantly hued sculptures illustrate his commitment to artistry while highlighting his ability to construct new methods of making.
